If you’re like me, the day you got your driver’s license was your first taste of real freedom.  I could go where I wanted…do what I wanted.

But, my parents didn’t just hand over the keys.  It was a process. There were many driving lessons before that, many discussions about changing the oil, filling the tank, or changing a tire.  I knew that freedom came with some responsibility.

Helping to raise children and grandchildren is a little like that — the process of turning over the keys to their lives after teaching and modeling what to do with the freedom that represents.   And it is a team effort, one that is vital to helping our children and grandchildren grow into the men and women God wants them to be.

And, in any discussion about freedom, I cannot help but reflect on the men and women in the military and their families who endure much hardship to protect and defend the freedom we enjoy.   And, too often, military children bear the cost of that freedom.  The reality is, kids with deployed parents have fewer members of the team helping to hand over the keys to their lives. That’s why we do Military Kids GrandCamp, where a military child and one set of grandparents go to camp together – establishing the understanding and trust they need as the child learns how to use their freedom.
