Would you like to live in a place where families take care of their own so completely that homelessness is almost non-existent, mental health and nursing homes are unnecessary and no social security system is needed? Well then, you should pack your bags and head to Seoul, South Korea...the next stop for our Olympic torch.

In Korea there is such a high regard for family that there is no such term as “extended-family”—just “family.” This “family” includes the children of your third cousin, twice removed.

Children hold the elderly in such high reverence that they call all old people “Grandfather” or “Grandmother”, epitomizing God’s command in Leviticus 19:32 (NIV):

“Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord.”

This is the great lesson which I learned from the Korean people—that all children are the grandchildren of all older people. What a tremendous society we would build if we showered the child down the street with the same love and attention that we give our grandchild.
