WIRED TO FEEL HIS PLEASURE

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Cor. 10:31

Eric Liddell understood something many of us miss in life. If you’ve seen the movie Chariots of Fire, you may remember his comment about wanting to run. He said, “I believe God made me for a purpose… and when I run, I feel His pleasure.” What do you do in which you feel God’s pleasure when you do it?

We might assume from this comment that Eric Liddell’s calling was to be a runner. Yes and no... We know that Eric was called by God to build His Kingdom as a missionary in China to which he devoted his life. Running was but one of those things he did well giving glory to His Creator. His last words on the day he died were “it’s complete surrender”, referring to his having lived a full and satisfying life in complete surrender to God’s purposes.

Are you able to show your grandchildren what it means to be completely surrendered to God’s purposes? Do you understand how God has wired them so you can encourage them to feel His pleasure in doing those things well? Do you know how He has wired you and what His purposes for your life are? It will be difficult to pass on to others that which we fail to grasp ourselves.

Eric Liddell continued running while a missionary. He understood that his calling involved being who God had wired him to be. Doing what he was wired to do, and doing it well, made God look great in everything he did. That is the kind of irresistible life that makes God look great in the eyes of your grandchildren. It might be an interesting exercise to ask them what makes God look great in your life. That’s scary!

Whatever God has wired you to do, do it with all your heart that you may feel His pleasure and the next generations will want to do the same. May God grant you the wisdom to understand what His purpose is for your life, the resolve to do it well, and the strength to finish well!

GRANDPAUSE: The fundamental deception of Satan is the lie that obedience can never bring happiness. (?R. C. Sproul)
